Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPEG (pronounced "jay-peg") is a standardized image compression mechanism. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the original name of the committee that wrote the standard.
The file format which employs this compression is commonly also called JPEG; the most common file extensions for this format are .jpeg, .jfif, .jpg, .JPG, or .JPE although .jpg is the most common on all platforms.
In September 2004 it was found out that several Microsoft products, including Windows XP, are vulnerable to an exploit related to JPEG-files. By exploiting this vulnerability a malicious hacker could take any PC in their control. It is suggested that users download updates from Windows Update as soon as possible.
